If you ever get bored or you just feel like watching a movie, I recommend you watch Full Metal Jacket. It is a war movie but not your typical American war movie where the United States is seen as the hero after attacking an evil army of either Russians or Middle Easters or Vietnamese. The movie takes place in the 1970s at that time the United States was fighting the Cold War in Vietnam. Throughout the movie you follow United States Marines who are being trained to go fight in Vietnam. For around one quarter of the movie all you see is how the Marines are trained and the process they go through to become soldiers. Through that quarter of the film you can kind of see the reality of how Marines are trained, something that recruiters never tell you about since they only tell you what is convenient for them instead of telling both the ups and downs. After going through the training process, the Marines later on get sent to war and you can see the conditions that soldiers go through when going to war. Through this movie you can see a glimpse of what being in a war is like and for those of you who are thinking of enlisting or have friends that are thinking of enlisting, this movie could change their opinion and their decision. This film shows the realities of war, and not the patriotic ideas that mislead public opinion. This movie is considered a classic and it’s not a really mainstream war movie like Saving Private Ryan or Blackhawk Down, and I think the reason for this is because even though these movies also show the dangers of war in their fighting scenes, they always picture the United States as heroes. In my opinion, Full Metal Jacket is a must- see movie.
