Selena Quintanilla Perez, or simply know as Selena, is the Queen of Cumbia, Tejano music and is an artist that inspired many. Selena is widely known in the Latino community, along with the rest of the world, because of the music she performed and her beautiful singing voice. Selena was born on April 16th, 1971. She started singing at a young age with her older sibling, Suzette and Abraham and was in a band with them called, Selena Y Los Dinos. Selena was majorly successful in the music industry, especially the Mexican music industry, as she mostly sang in spanish, despite English being her first language. Selena came out with six studio albums, Selena, Ven Conmigo, Entre a mi Mundo, Selena Live!, Amor Prohibido and Dreaming of You. Dreaming of You was her last album before she was shot and killed by her former fan club presidents who she was in a financial dispute with. Selena left a lasting impact in the music industry and also with a lot of young Chicanas who felt a connection to her and her music.
Selena has impacted so many people that to this day, people continue to love her and her music. She is known in many Latinx homes because past generations show their kids her music and they love it. There are now generations of kids that weren’t even born when Selena was alive but still love her music.
This year, Selena had major success. In August, Selena got her very own wax figure done by Madame Tussauds and it is located at the Hollywood location. In October, MAC makeup came out with MAC Selena, a limited edition set that was created with the help of Selena’s sister Suzette. Selena is going to be honored with her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017. Selena is and will always be dear to many hearts and will continue to be remembered, honored and cherished no matter how many years it has been since her tragic passing. Rest in peace Selena. Always and Forever.
