La Activista

My sole heart beat was a threat

Thump, thump, thump

Maíz adorned my every nail

My skin made of smooth maza,

Felt like the love in my abuelas voice.

My voice, calladita

Se me quebraban las palabras a decir “I’m American”

La sangre ardiente

Supernova at “You’re not Mexican”

Thump, thump, thump

A self-identity crisis

I know me

I don’t need to be found

Stop looking for me in crowds of nothings

Crowds of complacent beings

Look for me en las calles

Stand mesmerized at the words I whisper into the air

The roots I planted into the streets that are ridden with silence

Thump, thump, thump

Listen to my heart beat

that solely beats for itself.
